How to find a safe mattress

How to find a safe mattress that is eco-friendly.

A safe mattress that is eco-friendly is easy to find if you know what to look for. There are a lot of reasons this site was started,  but one of the most important is trying to help everyone buy a mattress that is safe from toxic materials. How do you make sure your mattress is toxic-free? It takes work.

First, you have to know what is in a mattress.  It’s really pretty simple.
Starting with the support you can find springs or a dense layer of foam. The support can also be water or air.

The comfort layer is foam. Usually it a a combination of layers.  It can be polyurethane foam, memory foam, or latex.

Then your mattress is covered with quilting.

This is very basic. Polyurethane foam is still the most widely made. In simple terms, it is petroleum-based with chemicals added. To make memory foam it’s almost the same process but with different chemicals. Latex foam starts with the sap from a rubber tree and again chemicals are added.

The goal here at Mattress Supermarket is to find mattresses that reduces the amount of chemicals and are as healthy for our customers as possible.

That is why we will strive to make you you have the information needed to make an informed decision.

Safe Mattress Labs

There are two major labs in that test foams. The largest and best known is Certipur.US. Manufacturers submit their foams and this independent lab tests Polyurethane foams. Once tested the foams are certified.

Certified foams are:
 ✓ Made without formaldehyde
✓ Also, made without ozone depleters
✓ Made without phthalates regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
✓ Made without mercury, lead and other heavy metals
✓ Low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million)
✓ Screened for relevant chemicals, including flame retardants, that are classified as carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins and are harmful to human health.

The second certification lab is the Control Unions certification program.  Their standard is commonly known as GOLS. “Global Organic Latex Standard “. The aim of the standard is to recognize products which may include, but  not limited to, mattress & bedding products, gloves, bands, shoe soles, rubber toys, condoms and any other product made out of organically grown natural rubber latex.

The third certification to look for is OEKO-TEX. They will test textiles. You can find this on sheets and mattress quilting. From their website, “Setting the standard for textile safety, from yarn to finished product. Every item bearing the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 label is certified as having passed safety tests for the presence of harmful substances.

If your product has these certifications then you can be assured the manufacturer cares about getting it right.

While we cant guarantee that that a mattress is 100% free of all chemicals we can say that we are trying to be safe and eco-friendly and  at the same time getting you the best nights sleep.
